This is my first read from both Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland, and I will definitely try them out again in the future. I haven't read as much contemporary romance this year, so I'm always happy to find one that's more hit than miss.
Kendall Sparks was a touch-and-go heroine for me. We first meet her sitting in an airport lamenting her life, while wearing a t-shirt that cost $800. I think I was predisposed to not like her because of her money... I mean, come on, I can spend $800 on so many better things than a t-shirt! Anyway, Kendall has a rather unique problem... she is a rich girl that stands to lose her fortune. Her prideful ol' grandfather decided to make her trust revocable if she did not produce a male heir by her 26th birthday. So Kendall has a decision to make... insemination or insolvency. I know what I would choose if that was my lot in life - how about you? Luckily Kendall didn't suffer from an overt number of insecurities, and I stopped judging a book by her (rich) cover. I do wish that she would have had a little more ambition and direction in her life because it seemed, up until this story, she was just tripping through life with her money and nothing else.
Captain Carter Clynes is the titled Playboy Pilot. He has a penchant for leggy brunette flight attendants (and co-pilots) and gives new meaning to "flying the friendly skies." Based on his reputation, I really expected Carter to be a bad boy... but he was far from it. When not having his knob polished in the cockpit, Carter was actually a good guy. How many hot guys do you see calling out bingo (with the flashy terminology), giving old folks pedicures and spiriting seniors around on their shopping trips? I know I have never come across one. While I tend to like my heroes a bit darker and more broody, I really can't say anything bad about Carter. Yes, he was a panty-sniffing manwhore. But a manwhore who had a good and caring heart, and when he recognized the potential for love, he embraced it wholeheartedly.
The relationship between Carter and Kendall was a little bit of instalust, with a drawn out path to love. They were jetsetting around the world to exotic locations, and its easy to fall in like with one another when your not in the real world. (Bachelor, anyone?) However, I enjoyed spending time with our couple in Rio, Dubai and Amsterdam. But even more, I enjoyed their time at Carter's home in Boca Raton. I loved this snippet into Carter's life and all his neighbors. (Though who the heck goes skinny dipping in a freshwater lake in Florida? That's just asking for a gator to bite something off!) Anyway, I did enjoy Carter and Kendall together, but I would have liked to see a little more character development. We had the minimal backstory for each character, but I didn't feel like we really got into any one person's head. I did enjoy the banter between the H/h, and the sexytimes were steamy and well-written.
There was also a manufactured drama that irked me. It could have been solved with a little communication, which is what we should be expecting as adults in the real world. But our heroine pulled the runaway bride routine. After that point, the story was somewhat predictable. I think I would have enjoyed the story more if the HEA would have been allowed to play out without the drama. No need to worry, the couple gets their HEA, its just delayed a little. I did like how everything ended.
The narrators of this book are quite popular and did a great job with the narration/performance. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this audiobook that I received from the publisher, Tantor Audio.
